Interpretive biography of Alexandre Herculano, which puts at the reach of the English-speaking readers a reasoned and balanced vision of this 19th century Portuguese historian and writer. Overall view of his life (Lisbon 1810 – Quinta de Vale de Lobos, Azoia de Baixo, Santarém, 1877), a poet and novelist, known thouroughly as an historian, especially due to his “History of Portugal”, in 4 volumes, which features an innovative vision, for the time, of the Portuguese history, since its beginnings until the time of King Dom Afonso III.
Chapters focus on “From childhood to adulthood”, “Politics in the time of Herculano”, “Herculano as historian (two parts)”, “Herculano as author of historical novels”, “the public and private lives” and “the last days: neither resignation nor renounciation”.
