A longa e operosa carreira de Carlos Botelho, entre 1930, quando se estreou no Salão dos Independentes, e 1982, quando a morte o surpreende quase com 83 anos, eternamente pintando, foi um percurso feliz e de excepcional sucesso público. Premiado em Portugal ao longo de diversos ciclos de produção artística (no SPN em 1939-1940, na FCG em 1961), expondo em todos os Salões de Arte Moderna mas também na 1ª Exposição de Artes Plásticas da SNBA dos jovens neo-realistas, e, desde os anos 50, na inovadora Galeria de Março (1952 e 54), na 1ª Exposição de Pintura Moderna Portuguesa, promovida pelos estudantes da Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa, nas galerias Buchholz e Diário de Notícias, nos anos em que elas foram pólos activos de contemporaneidade. Teve também inédito sucesso internacional, anunciado com o 1º Prémio em S. Francisco em 1939, em Paris (Galeria Lucy Krogh, em 1947; Durand-Ruel, 1955), Génova, Bruxelas, Turim, Londres, por duas vezes na Bienal de Veneza (1950 e 1960) e regularmente em S. Paulo (1951, Prémio de Aquisição, 1953, 1955, 1957).

This beautiful book, a kind of catalog-raisonée of Carlos Botelho’s life long work, printed on top quality paper, with more than 350 reproductions of the paintings and photographs of excellent definition, and accompanied by a text of scientific rigor, serves as a corollary to one of the unavoidable names of 20th century Portuguese painting.
Carlos Botelho’s long and hard-hitting career, between 1930, when he debuted at the Salão dos Independentes, and 1982, when death surprises him almost at the age of 83 years old, eternally painting, was a happy journey and of exceptional public success.
Awarded in Portugal over several cycles of artistic production (at SPN in 1939-1940, at FCG in 1961), exhibiting in all the Modern Art Salons but also at the 1st SNBA Plastic Arts Exhibition of young neo-realists, and , since the 1950s, at the innovative Galeria de Março (1952 and 54), at the 1st Exhibition of Modern Portuguese Painting, promoted by students from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, at the Buchholz and Diário de Notícias galleries, in the years when they were poles of contemporaneity value. He also had unprecedented international success, announced with the 1st Prize in San Francisco in 1939, in Paris (Lucy Krogh Gallery, in 1947; Durand-Ruel, 1955), Genoa, Brussels, Turin, London, twice at the Venice Biennale (1950 and 1960) and regularly in S.
