O “Estado e a Revolução” (1917) descreve o papel do Estado na sociedade, a necessidade da revolução proletária e as inadequações teóricas da social-democracia em realizar a revolução para estabelecer a ditadura do proletariado.
Pouco antes da revolução soviética de 1917, Lenin escreveu “Estado e Revolução”. Baseando-se em citações detalhadas de Karl Marx e Friedrick Engels, ele apresenta uma visão marxista do estado, descreve como uma revolução da classe trabalhadora irá derrubá-lo e vai além ao mostrar como a social-democracia não é suficiente – mesmo em repúblicas democráticas como aquelas desfrutadas por muitos países ocidentais hoje, a classe dominante está no controle da sociedade e nunca abrirá mão do poder. Segundo Lenin, uma revolução comunista é o único remédio para a luta de classes.

The State and Revolution (1917) describes the role of the State in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution to establish the dictatorship of the proletariat.
Shortly before the Soviet revolution of 1917, Lenin wrote State and Revolution. Drawing on detailed quotes from Karl Marx and Friedrick Engels, he lays down a Marxist view of the state, describes how a working-class revolution will overthrow it, and goes further in showing how social democracy is not enough – even in democratic republics such as those enjoyed by many western countries today, the ruling class is still in control of society, and will never relinquish power. According to Lenin, a Communist revolution is the only remedy for class struggle.
