Having made a portrait of a blind war victim, Martin Roemers (born 1962) realized there was a tremendous potency in the image, and began to make photographs of thousands of people who had lost their eyesight as children or young soldiers during the Second World War. The Eyes of War features around 40 portraits of war victims from Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Ukraine and Russia.
Over the past few decades, the traces of World War II only appear to have become invisible. The horror can still be seen in the stories told by survivors their eyes reflect the terror and trauma of a childhood spent in wartime. In his picture of a blind war victim, photographer Martin Roemers (*1962 in Oldehove) discovered a haunting metaphor for the depths of the human soul in general, and consequently found thousands of people who lost their eyesight when they were children or young soldiers during the war. Featuring around forty portraits and accompanying interviews, this publication remembers the forgotten while at the same time transcending their individual stories of suffering. Formerly bitter foes from Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine, and Russia are united in their fate as blind persons and victims of the war.

Die Spuren des Zweiten Weltkriegs sind im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte nur scheinbar unsichtbar geworden. In den Gesichtern von Überlebenden ist das Grauen nach wie vor zu erkennen; ihre Augen spiegeln den Schrecken und die Traumata einer Kindheit im Krieg. Im Bild des erblindeten Kriegsopfers hat der Fotograf Martin Roemers (*1962 in Oldehove) eine gespenstische Metapher für die seelischen Abgründe der Conditio humana im Allgemeinen gefunden und in der Folge Tausende Menschen ausfindig gemacht, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Kinder oder junge Soldaten ihr Augenlicht verloren.
Die Publikation erinnert mit 40 Porträts und begleitenden Interviews an die Vergessenen und weist zugleich über deren individuelle Leidensgeschichten hinaus. Als Blinde und Kriegsopfer im Schicksal vereint, stehen sich die einst erbitterten Feinde aus Deutschland, Großbritannien, den Niederlanden, Belgien, der Ukraine und Russland in den Aufnahmen gegenüber.
